Liz Scott- Head Coach, 16-18 Team Coach
Hello! My name is Liz, and I am excited to be coaching our 16-18 teams. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such a hard-working and dedicated group of young women. We are looking forward to creating a fun and innovative routine to music by Prince this year.
I am also one of our Head Coaches, so you will be hearing from me a lot this year! I have been involved with synchro for over 20 years, and this will be my 13th year coaching. In the past, I have had the opportunity to coach in Dresden, Germany, and was selected as part of the coaching staff for Synchro Alberta's Provincial Teams that attended US Open, UANA Pan Ams, and SYNC.
I have a Kinesiology degree and am a Certified Personal Trainer with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. I am also a Competition - Development certified coach. Coaching is my passion, and I believe that working hard can be fun.
I am excited for another great season with Nova Synchro!
Samara Hipkin- 13-15 "S" Team Coach
Hi there, My name is Samara but I generally go by Sam. A bit about me: I have been involved with synchro for about 18 years now, my first 6 years as an athlete were spent with Nova, and I continued to swim with the Auroras for the next 8 years of my life, as well as coach at varying levels from rec to national stream for the past 8 or 9 years. Once my sister (Coach Meg) and I retired from swimming at the end of 2014 we began pursuing the entrepreneurial life via formulating our own natural skin care line which we now sell online and at farmers markets. I am also in the midst of pursuing my master herbalist certificate and am a certified Essentrics instructor, with hopes to also pursue my yoga instructor certification.
I am incredibly excited to work with my 13-15 'Transylvania' team this season, and to continue to help them on their paths into incredible athletes and young women!
Meaghan Hipkin- 13-15 "M" Team Coach
My name is Meaghan (AKA Meg) Hipkin. This is my first season coaching for Nova and I am so excited to be back here! I have been involved in Synchro for the last 17 years, both as an athlete and a coach, and the first 7 of those years were spent as an Athlete with this wonderful club. I have been coaching for the last nine years and over this time I have coached virtually every level including pre-comp, Recreational,provincial stream and national level athletes.
I love to coach and to see athletes grow and achieve, whether it be learning how to do a back layout position or making a provincial or national team, I will do what I can to help them succeed. Synchro has always been my Passion and It is a joy for me to be able to pass that along to the next generation of mermaids!
Randi Burton - Club Manager, 11-12 Team Coach
Hi there! I'm Randi, I have been coaching with Nova for the last 4 seasons and I'm excited to be back for a fifth! I am coaching the 11-12 team and I am also the club manager this season. I have been involved in Synchro for over 20 years as both an athlete, and as a coach. I spent much of that time in Lethbridge; including 5 years as the Head Coach of Southern Synchro. I joined the coaching staff at Nova after I moved to Edmonton several years ago and I absolutely love being a part of this club!
Maggie Jensen - 10 and Under Team Coach
Hi there! My name is Maggie Jensen and I am from Red Deer. I moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta in 2011. I am a Chemical Engineering and full time coach. I have been swimming for 14 years starting in the recreation programs and moving to the provincial and national streams. I have been on teams in Red Deer, Calgary and with the University of Alberta. I was the President of of the University of Alberta Synchro Club for the last two years of my degree. This is my second year coaching the 10 and Under team. I started coaching with Nova’s Learn to Synch and Train to Synch programs in 2015-2016 season with Emily Olsen.
I fell in love with synchro when I was young and want to build the love for the sport in the younger swimmers at Nova Synchro.
Becky Thera- Head Coach, Extra Routine Coach
My name is Becky Thera and I will be coaching extra routines with Nova this season. I am also one of the Head Coaches this season. Some of my duties as Head Coach include organizational work for our many programs, programming for the development of all athletes and coaching support.
I am from Regina, SK, where I swam for 5 years at a Provincial and National level. This is my 10th season coaching and I have coached every level possible, from recreational to national level athletes and everything in between! I am Competition Development certified and I worked as the Technical Director and Outreach Coordinator for Synchro Saskatchewan before moving to Edmonton. I moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta. I am currently in the last year of my Master of Fine Arts.
I am looking forward to coaching a solo and 2 duets this season! It is always fun to choreograph new routines and get to know new athletes!
Becky Edwards- Extra Routine Coach
Hi, my name is Becky Edwards and I am very excited to be coaching two extra routines with the Nova Artistic Swimming Club. I have been involved with coaching artistic swimming at many different levels for the last 10 years in Nanaimo, BC. I also swam artistic swimming as a master athlete at the FINA World Masters Championship in Montreal and swam for my university team at Queens University.
I currently have a Masters degree in Science in Geography and I am currently working with Ducks Unlimited Canada in Edmonton on a large wetland mapping project in the Northwest Territories.
Naomi Grenke- Learn to Synchro Coach
Hi my name is Naomi Grenke and I am Nova’s new Learn to synchro coach this year. This is my first year coaching but I have been swimming with Nova for the past 9 years both in the provincial and national streams. I have always loved the water and synchro became my passion at the age of 8. I am very excited to coach new swimmers and to pass on this passion.
This year I am planning to get my next level of coaching as well as working towards getting my judging credentials. I am very excited to continue on in my journey with Nova and the synchro community.

Annaleise Walker- Little Synchro Coach
My name is Annaleise and I’m coaching the Little Synchro’s. This is my first year coaching however I’ve been swimming with Nova for the past 5 years. I’m very excited to share my love of swimming and get to know the athletes. I know we are going to have an amazing year!
Abigail Grenke- Little Synchro Coach
Hey! My name is Abigail, I am one of Nova's little Synchro coaches and I couldn't be more excited for this year. I'm currently on Nova's 16-18 competitive team and this will be my ninth year swimming. This is my first year coaching but I have always wanted to coach. I have loved the water and synchro since I was 8 and I can't wait to pass on my love for swimming to others.
Calla Knudson - Optional Program Coach
My name is Calla and I will be coaching the 11-12 Optional Figures program for the 2017-2018 season.
I have been an artistic swimmer for the past ten years, competing provincially with Nova Synchro for four years and nationally with the Edmonton Auroras for one year. For the last five years I swam with the University of Alberta Synchro Club, where I was also involved on the club executive as Treasurer and Fundraising Chair.
I am currently working towards a M.Sc. in Geology from the University of Alberta.
This is my second year as a coach and I am so excited to share my love of this sport with a new generation of swimmers!
Blair Grimes - Learn to Synchro Coach
Hi! My name is Blair and I am very excited to be coaching Learn to Synchro this year. This is my second season coaching, but I have been swimming competitively for 9 years - 5 of which have been in the provincial and national synchro streams with Nova. I just finished my first year of university in nursing, and always look forward to continuously spreading my love for synchro with new swimmers!
